Building Economic Opportunity – Together

Just 40 minutes from Downtown Phoenix, Maricopa is strategically located in the center of two fast-growing and dynamic counties: Maricopa and Pinal.

In just 22 short years, the City of Maricopa has morphed from a rural farming community into a modern and vibrant full-service suburban city.

Maricopa is outside of the density and hustle of the Phoenix Metro yet offers immediate and close access to the full range of assets that are critical to facilitate business growth and success.

We call it the Maricopa Advantage!

FREIGHT RAIL

The Union Pacific railroad travels through Maricopa by way of it’s east-west line – traveling the width of the state from Yuma to San Simon – which is part of the railroad’s Sunset Route, a 760-mile corridor between Los Angeles and El Paso. An important north-south line connects the border crossing at Nogales to the Sunset Route, allowing cross-border traffic to access that major thoroughfare. Union Pacific also maintains rail lines and facilities in the Phoenix area. As businesses and industries grow or relocate to the area, Union Pacific looks for opportunities to provide freight rail access.

Union Pacific operates 691 miles of track in Arizona with a capital investment of $49 million. During 2024, 24,316 rail cars originated in Arizona and included shipment of the following commodities by volume: Intermodal-Wholesale, Metallic Minerals, Non-Ferrous Metals, Wheat & Flour, and Cement & Miscellaneous Minerals. Similarly, 88,356 rail cars terminated in Arizona and included the delivery of the following commodities by volume: Intermodal-Wholesale, Assembled Autos, Sulfur, Cement & Miscellaneous Minerals, and Grain.

Rail is the safest way to move large quantities of freight over land. In fact, freight rail is 17 times safer than trucks per gross ton miles, according to data from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and U.S. Department of Transportation. From 2020-2024, Union Pacific invested more than $355 million strengthening its Arizona infrastructure. Projects include new ties and rail, as well as bridge maintenance.

PASSENGER RAIL

Maricopa also offers passenger rail access and is the greater Phoenix area’s Amtrak hub. Amtrak’s Texas Eagle and Sunset Limited routes stop in Maricopa, with service to cities including Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago and New Orleans. If Phoenix is your final destination, Maricopa is the only stop in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
